Refurbished Imaging Systems: How to Buy Without Regulatory Risk

Refurbished CT and MRI systems can cut capital costs by half, if buyers verify documentation, calibration and warranty properly.

Refurbished imaging systems now account for a significant share of hospital capital projects. The economics are compelling, but the due diligence is different from buying new.

Before committing, confirm the device service history, the remaining life of the X-ray tube or magnet, and whether the seller provides an installation qualification report. Ask for calibration certificates and the software version the system will ship with.

Regulatory status matters too: in most markets the seller is responsible for verifying that a refurbished device still meets the applicable essential requirements, and for documenting any changes made during refurbishment.

A written warranty of at least 12 months, with defined response times, is a reasonable baseline for high-value imaging equipment.
